On The Beach at Marrowstone
It was an evening walk
not unlike others
We had made
At that time of day
And that time of the season
In that same place.
There was something about the pre-sunset light
The way it slanted through the trees
It warmed our complexions
And the tones of our voices
We commented about it out loud
And observed it on one another’s faces.
The warm golden liquid light
Like the last sunset of summer
In the middle of March.
It’s good to stop walking
Sit and drink it in
Like hot tea on a gray afternoon
It reaches to our toes
Even as we burrow them into the cool sand
Watching the harbor seals
Watching us
Ditto the bald eagles
Tilting their heads to spy on us
With one golden eye.
We tilt our own heads back
And smile up
Into the sky
And the golden eye
Did you think it too?
At THIS time of day
At THIS time of the season
At THIS time in our lives
In this happy golden light..
THIS IS IT
